As the demand for reclaimed timber increases across commercial and residential projects within Australia, the need for an industry wide standard has never been more important.

The Interim Industry Standard for Reclaimed Timber offers manufacturers, suppliers and users specific Grading guidelines. Published by the Forest and Wood Products Australia, the primary objective of the guidelines is to provide the Australian reclaimed timber industry with a professional, consistent standard.

KENNEDY’S CLASSIC AGED TIMBERS COMES IN THE FOLLOWING STRUCTURAL GRADES:

Graded timber - classic aged premium

CLASSIC AGED PREMIUM

This timber is the pinnacle of reclaimed timber. It will be graded to a minimum of F17 and contain a subtle blend of characteristics of its former use, such as nail, bolt holes surface ageing etc. All of which give warmth and appeal to the finished product. Large bolt holes and other evidence of former use can be either plugged or black resin filled. This is available in dressed, brushed, sawn, Smokey grey or sawtooth finish.

SOME TYPICAL EXAMPLES OF PREMIUM GRADE INCLUDE:

  • Tight gum veins
  • Black resin filled bolt holes
  • Tight surface checking
Graded timber - classic aged character

CLASSIC AGED CHARACTER

This timber will be rich in character with a strong showing of the characteristics of its former use. These characteristics will be left “as is”. This is available in dressed, brushed, sawn, Smokey grey or sawtooth finish.

SOME TYPICAL EXAMPLES OF PREMIUM GRADE INCLUDE:

  • Nail holes, some with tannin staining in nail holes
  • Open gum pockets
  • Surface checking
  • Open gum veins
Graded timber - classic aged rustic

CLASSIC AGED RUSTIC

This timber will be full of characteristics of its former use. Large bolt holes, surface checking, splits etc. will be evident in this timber. This is available in brushed, sawn, or “as is”.

  • What is the end application?
  • What is the finish required?
  • What is the structural grading required?
  • What colour and or durability are required?
  • Are bolt holes to be plugged/black resin filled?
  • Is the timber to be used internally or externally?
  • Will the timber receive any coating either prior to or after installation?
  • Will your supplier provide a certificate of timber origin and grading compliance?
